Move to a new host

Plan the move, copy the website and email, then switch DNS with the old host kept as a safety net.

Moving hosts is mostly about order. Do these steps in sequence and nothing goes missing.

  1. Work through the migration checklist List everything the old host does before you touch it.
  2. Lower your DNS TTL A day ahead, so the switch is quick.
  3. Move the website Copy files and database, then test privately.
  4. Move your email Only if email is moving too.
  5. Switch without downtime Change DNS and keep the old server answering.
